New York State police respond to hundreds of weather-related accidents each year and are reminding motorists to be prepared if they must drive in wintry conditions.
State police showed News 12 what it looks like to brake at high speeds in the snow and what happens when a car fishtails at Randall Airport in New Hampton Tuesday.
Their top tips include turning the wheel in the direction of your back tires if you lose control and making sure to have emergency essentials on hand in case of an accident.
“Have a blanket, shovel. If you can put kitty litter or something to give you traction if you do get stuck. A bottle of water, some granola bars. Things like that," says Trooper Ronald Dawson\, of Troop F.
State police also recommend against what they say is an increasingly common practice of driving in pajamas, especially this time of year.
