State officials slam Ramapo fire inspector
State education officials have accused Ramapo Town's fire inspector of ignoring serious safety violations at a number of private schools in the area.
They accuse Adam Peltz of giving passing grades to private schools like the Rockland Institute for Special Education, also known as RISE, when they actually had violations "so severe that the department required immediate action."
In the RISE case, state inspectors visited the school just two weeks after Peltz inspected it on Jan. 14.
RISE facility manager Yossi Weiss says that before state inspectors arrived, the school was unaware of any infractions.
The state inspectors visited schools in the region just weeks after News 12's "Playing With Fire" investigation found dozens of code violations at private schools and Jewish yeshivas.
State inspectors found more violations at the secular Green Meadow Waldorf School, another facility that Peltz allegedly overlooked.
Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence ordered for more re-inspections this week as part of a probe that could lead to disciplinary action.
State Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski went a step further, calling the town’s inspections "beyond negligent" and calling for the state to take control of the buildings departments in Ramapo and Spring Valley.
Additionally, News 12 has learned that Peltz is still on the job as the investigation plays out.
The state Board of Education did not immediately respond to News 12's request for comment.
