State halts razing of Mount Vernon 'eyesore'
The state Department of Labor has stopped the demolition of a Mount Vernon home gutted by a fire due to asbestos fears.
The house on 232 South Third Ave., which neighbors say had become an eyesore and a magnet for drug addicts over the past year, is now undergoing testing by the department.
City officials say an application for a demolition permit claimed there was no asbestos at the house. However, according to an earlier report, asbestos had been found in roofing material.
The Department of Labor is expected to have results of tests conducted on materials from the house by next week.
