Things haven?t gone too smoothly for Weld in the political arena of late. He suffered a blow when he lost the GOP nomination to John Faso. Then, Weld failed to secure the Independence Party Bid. Reports later surfaced that Weld?s running mate once donated campaign funds to the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Eliot Spitzer.
As if all the previous struggles weren?t enough, Republican Party Chairman Stephen Minarik asked Weld to drop out of the race Monday. Minarik claims he asked Weld to end his bid because primaries are a ?divisive exercise that does little other than drain campaign dollars.? Although Faso was designated as the party?s candidate, Weld gained enough votes to force a primary.
Still, Weld may have luck on his side. Party leaders asked him to leave the Massachusetts race in 1990. However, he stayed in and became governor of the state. Weld could announce his decision as early as Tuesday.
