The Spring Valley Fire Department said the plea deal in the fatal Evergreen fire shows their lives mean nothing to the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.
Department leadership said DA Tom Walsh fell short on his promise to do everything in his office's power to get justice for Jared Lloyd, the firefighter killed in the incident.
"We hope the DA can sleep with his lack of justice at night…his deal that was a complete joke and a slap in the face to every volunteer firefighter,” the fire department wrote.
This comes as other top fire officials call on the DA to resign.
County Executive Ed Day calls the plea unacceptable.
Six people were originally charged in the criminal investigation into the fire.
Charges against two village building inspectors, Ray Cannario and Wayne Ballard, were eventually dropped.
Two Evergreen employees, former director Denise Kerr and Manual Lema, received adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, which means they won't face any jail time and could also have their charges dismissed.
