Spitzer energy adviser resigns amid threat probe
(AP) - Spitzer administration energy adviser StevenMitnick has resigned after seven months on the job amid aninvestigation of claims that he threatened a Republican on thePublic Service Commission (PSC), Mitnick confirmed. In April, PSC member Cheryl Buley, an appointee of formerRepublican Gov. George Pataki, said Mitnick had threatened her totry to get her to back off efforts to investigate ConsolidatedEdison over last summer's major blackout in New York City. During a public PSC meeting, Buley said Mitnick had threatenedher career five or six times since the governor took office Jan. 1.The resignation of the former Washington-based energy industryattorney comes as Spitzer faces investigations over two aides whowere found to have used state police against Senate Republicanleader Joseph Bruno. A state Attorney General's Officeinvestigation said the two aides, one who has been suspended andthe other transferred out of the governor's office, used statepolice to track the state's top Republican when he used statehelicopters and state police drivers to mix state business withpolitical fundraisers in New York City. Mitnick said he wanted to return to the private sector and thathis resignation was "definitely" not forced by the Buleyaccusations. He said he has fully cooperated in the investigation,providing sworn testimony and documents. He also said he wasn'tinvolved in and has not been questioned in the currentadministration scandal involving Bruno's flights.
