Two days after their heated debate, Westchester County Executive Andy Spano and his Republican challenger Rob Astorino continued to accuse each other of using the race card to gain an advantage ahead of the election.

During the debate in White Plains Wednesday, Spano accused Astorino of appealing to racist sentiments in his criticism of the county's affordable housing settlement, which would require $50 million to market 750 units to minorities in predominantly white communities.

Astorino responded by claiming Spano is using racism charges to hide his role in the federal lawsuit leading to the agreement.

On Thursday, Spano toned down his allegations, admitting people who oppose the housing plan are not motivated by racism and have legitimate concerns. However, responding to a question about the controversy Friday, Spano said he stands by the comments he made about Astorino.
