The 16-year-old boy struck and killed by a Metro-North train on Monday has been identified as Sleepy Hollow resident and Fordham Preparatory School sophomore Owen Kelly.

It appears Kelly took his own life.

A Metro-North spokesperson says Kelly walked in front of the train and was fatally struck near the Philipse Manor station around 2 p.m. Monday. The train's engineer saw the boy and tried to stop the train, but he was too late.

His parents were reportedly out of the country when they received the news.

Fordham Preparatory School issued a statement Tuesday, in which it said, "The Fordham Prep community is profoundly saddened to acknowledge the passing of a member of its sophomore class. We are united in prayer and support for his family and friends and all the members of our community who mourn this terrible loss."

With students back in class on Tuesday, school officials mobilized their crisis team and made counselors available to help Owen Kelly's classmates cope with his loss.
