Sleepy Hollow detective sued for police brutality
A Tarrytown couple is filing a civil rights lawsuit against a Sleepy Hollow police detective who is already facing allegations of excessive force.
Mario and Awilda Gomez allege Detective Jose Quinoy attacked them last year. The lawsuit claims it all started when Mario Gomez went to the Sleepy Hollow police station in 2006 to talk with Quinoy about the alleged romantic relationship he was having with Gomez's 22-year-old daughter. The suit claims Mario Gomez was punched, kicked and shocked with a stun gun during a confrontation with Quinoy. Gomez claims he was knocked unconscious by the attack. An attorney for the couple says when Awilda Gomez showed up to the police station to check on her husband, she also allegedly was roughed up by Quinoy and eventually arrested too.
Quinoy is also at the center of another brutality complaint in Sleepy Hollow. In August, the detective used a Taser on a 16-year-old boy after the teen wouldn't hand over his bike. Police were concerned that bike might be stolen. Police claim the teenager struggled with cops and resisted arrest before the Taser was used.
The couple?s attorney is wondering why village officials and the police chief continue to keep Quinoy on the force. Meanwhile, the Gomez?s are facing charges of resisting arrest in the confrontation with Quinoy.
