At least six tenants were displaced Tuesday after a Peekskill senior housing complex fire.

The fire broke out in the living room of an apartment in the complex on Main Street. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to battle the flames and rescue residents trapped inside. Firefighters rescued some of the elderly tenants by ladder.

The owner of the apartment where the fire started was not home at the time the flames broke out. He said his apartment is now destroyed.

One police officer broke his foot while trying to kick in the door of the apartment on fire. Other rescue crew members were treated for smoke inhalation.

The displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross. Most of them will be staying with family members.

Meanwhile, investigators say the cause of the fire was electrical.
