A YMCA that was shuttered long ago on Mount Vernon’s south side could be transformed into a housing complex.
Some residents say that if a deal goes through, they want to make sure that young members of the community still have activities in the area.

Local developers say they want to buy the iconic building on South Second Avenue from the city, demolish it and build a $120 million state-of-the-art apartment complex with a large portion of units set for artists.

The developers, who have been working on a plan for two years to transform the long-abandoned neighborhood and turn it into an arts district, plan on building a performance space inside the complex for dance, music and other arts.

Many longtime residents say before a deal goes through, it's important for city leaders to mandate that there be educational and extracurricular activities for students to make up for the loss of the YMCA.
