A Milford court sentenced a Shelton man to decades in prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in his wife's death.
Thomas Infante, 55, accepted a plea deal that calls for his 40-year sentence to be suspended after 25 years.
He shot his wife, Lisa, in the back of her head in their bedroom in September 2015. Police say the couple had marital problems. She was having an affair and wanted a divorce.
Infante told investigators that he grew depressed and snapped. After the shooting, police say Infante took off, leaving his wife's body in the home for their children to find.
Lisa Infante was a local EMT. They were married for 27 years.
At his sentencing Tuesday, Thomas Infante broke down in the middle of an emotional apology.
"I want to say I'm sorry to everybody that any of this ever happened," he said, shortly before choking up.
In the courtroom, other family members cried as well.
Lisa Infante's sister addressed the court, describing years of emotional abuse she said she observed between her sister and brother-in-law.
And Infante's daughter also spoke. She corroborated their marital problems, but she also said she had a special bond with her father and argued that he's not a monster.
The couple had four children. People on both sides say the plea deal spares the family the additional pain of a trial.
