Sen. Clinton fizzles in Iowa caucus
Sen. Hillary Clinton's (D-N.Y.) presidential ambitions took a hit Thursday in Iowa's Democratic caucus. The former first lady nabbed third place, behind winner Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and former Senator John Edwards. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Obama had 38 percent of the vote, Edwards had 30 percent and Clinton had 29 percent.Sen. Clinton said she is already looking forward to the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8. She said is ready for the rest of the campaign and has "always planned to run a national campaign."Residents in the senator's hometown of Chappaqua downplayed the results. One resident made sure to point out that previous presidential candidates have won Iowa but failed to secure the Democratic Party's nomination and there have been other candidates to win their party's nomination without winning in Iowa.In 2004, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) won the Iowa caucus and later won his party's nomination, as did former Vice President Al Gore in 2000. In 1992, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) won the Iowa caucus, but failed to capture the party's nomination. The nomination went to Bill Clinton, who went on to serve two terms as president. On the Republican side, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was victorious, with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney landing in second place and former Senator Fred Thompson in third place.Related information:Iowa tests Clinton's presidential bid
