The 25th annual Polar Bear Plunge for the Special Olympics will be held Saturday in Seaside Heights.
Organizers were out Friday making all the final preparations for the popular fundraising event.
“We’re expecting over 7,000 people to brave the chilly ocean,” says Chairperson Kevin Burke. “And probably about 25,000 to 35,000 more spectators.”
All of the money raised during the annual event will go to the New Jersey chapter of the Special Olympics.
Crews were setting up bleachers for spectators and setting up the event tents.
Law enforcement officials say that there will also be heavy security to protect all those who attend.
“SWAT teams ready and many, many undercover (officers),” says Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd.
Hotels and motels in towns like Lavallette, Seaside Park and Toms River are booked solid for the event. Organizers say that spectators should arrive early.
Check-in begins at 9 a.m. The Polar Bear Plunge will begin at 1 p.m.
