City officials unveiled a plan Monday at the Department of Education to save sports in Mount Vernon schools.
The Save Our Sports program, started in June by Mayor Clinton Young and others after budget cuts put sports in peril, raised $219,000 to reinstate junior varsity and varsity sports in the fall. However, $300,000 is needed to fully fund all sports.
On Monday, the school district announced that it would fund an intramural program for middle school students. While those students won't be allowed to travel for games, officials believe it's a sensible compromise.
Meanwhile, fundraising events will continue throughout the year to keep junior varsity and varsity sports going.
