No laughing matter: ‘Implied’ threat against Cortlandt HS deemed a prank
An “implied” threat against Walter Panas High School was deemed a prank, but no one in the Lakeland Central School District is laughing.
Schools Superintendent George Stone says a community member saw an Instagram post made by a male student at Walter Panas High School late Thursday night and became worried.
Stone says the post showed “one of our students with what appeared to be a toy gun” and referencing another incident that took place in the district. He says he notified police immediately.
County police found the implied threat was not credible.
Friday’s occurrence comes after rumors swirled Monday about a supposed threat made by different student at Walter Panas, who supposedly got into an argument with another student. School officials say that threat was also fake.
Either way, security was stepped up at schools in the district.
School district officials say the male student at Walter Panas who made that Instagram post will not be allowed back on campus until the district does an independent review of the incident.
Officials say administrators at the high schools and middle school will continue to reinforce to students the responsible use of social media and repercussions of inappropriate use.
