A school bus with some 25 children on board got tangled in what was initially feared to be an electric wire Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened at the end of the school day, when the bus driver was turning from Parkway Place onto North Division Street. As the bus was rounding the corner, its top snagged a wire that has been down since Wednesday.
Not knowing if it was an electric wire, the driver stopped the bus and called 911, making sure no student got off or came in contact with the wire.
When police and firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered the children were not in any danger because the wire was only a telephone cable, and the bus was allowed to leave.
"You've got a little kids on the bus, so you're worried about them touching the side of the bus or anything, so it would have been a little bit hairier than what it ended up being," says Peekskill Fire Chief John Pappas.
