A tractor-trailer crash on the Saw Mill River Parkway early Thursday morning caused a traffic nightmare for commuters.
According to authorities, the accident occurred at around 5 a.m. at the Manville Road overpass. Police say the driver of the truck, following directions on his GPS, went the wrong way and ended up stuck under the overpass. The vehicle was bent in several places, but no cargo spilled out and no one was hurt in the crash.
All lanes on the southbound Saw Mill were shut down while the truck was pulled onto Grant Street, which was also closed while crews shored up the rig before towing it away.
According to towing workers, the driver spotted the bridge at the last moment and swerved to the side of the road, which prevented the top of the truck from being ripped off.
"They come down the parkway, and it's dark, and they hit the bridge," says John Kelly, a towing company worker.
The crash comes two weeks after another truck driver guided by his GPS got stuck on the northbound side of the same road and spilled his cargo.
