The devastation from Harvey facing the residents in Texas is bringing back memories for homeowners in the Hudson Valley who suffered through Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene.
It's been nearly five years since Sandy ravaged parts of Stony Point, and the road to recovery in the northern Rockland community has been slow. Although there are signs of progress, many longtime homeowners have been left in limbo, unable to rebuild.
Beach Toad homeowners Lynn Hayes and Joe Burkert suffered severe flooding during both Irene and Sandy. They say they fear that many homeowners in Houston could suffer a fate worse than those in the Hudson Valley.  They say that it may take many months for some of the Houston residents to get back into their homes, and that not everyone will be able to go back at all.
Burkert says the best thing Harvey victims can do is not give up.
“Be patient and take it one day at a time. Be very patient,” he says.
