Rye says goodbye to volunteer firefighter
Family and friends said a final good bye to a Rye volunteer firefighter who was hit and killed by a car last month in Port Chester.
Richard Cadigan died Jan. 31, one day shy of his 62nd birthday. He served as a captain of a hook and ladder company with the Rye Fire Department.
His memorial service was held Saturday in Mamaroneck.
His siblings say volunteering was a big part of his life. "He was downtown on 9/11 and saw the plane hit the building, the second plane, and he was just so moved by the whole experience that he wanted to give back to the community when he saw how heroic the firefighters were there," says brother Charles Cadigan. "There's a strong need in the community for people to volunteer and give back and I think my brother's spirit embodied that. I hope other people will do the same."
