Westchester officials are keeping Rye Playland amusement park closed for the rest of the summer.
The historic park will remain closed for the rest of the 2020 season amid ongoing health concerns because of the coronavirus pandemic.
For months, the county has been looking at ways to safely open the park, but announced Tuesday it is unable to do so.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer has acknowledged cleaning rides between each person and maintaining social distancing as potential challenges when trying to reopen a park of this size.
The amusement park, which has been open since 1928, has been a source of revenue for the county, which is already hurting due to the pandemic shutdown.
Another possible roadblock, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced last week that amusement parks won't be included in phase four of the state's reopening plan.
The park was supposed to open for the season in May, but the county delayed its start date as part of a regional effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
"It's disappointing, but I understand why they did it. At least part of Playland is open with the boardwalk, the minigolf, and the beach. It's better than nothing being open at all," says Ed Malley, of Eastchester.
Playland Beach will stay open to residents with mask requirements and social distancing in place.
Without people at the amusement park, the county is shifting its focus to completing capital improvements to rides, concessions and the pool.

The expectation is the park will reopen on time in 2021.
