Rye Playland hosts Lustgarten walk for cancer
Rye Playand hosted the Lustgarten Foundation's sixth annual Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk.
The goal of the event is to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer.
The walk was sponsored by News 12 and hosted by reporter Lisa LaRocca. It was co-founded by Tara Shanes-Hernandez, who lost her mother to pancreatic cancer six years ago.
Lustgarten has raised $1.7 million in the six years the walk has been held, $375,000 of which was raised this year alone.
Organizers say that pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease, with only a seven-percent survival rate.
The Lustgarten Foundation is America's largest private foundation dedicated to funding pancreatic cancer research. Organizers say 100 percent of donations go directly to research because Cablevision underwrites all of the Lustgarten Foundation's administrative costs. Cablevision is the parent company of News 12.
