A 43-year-old mother and nurse passed away from coronavirus after working on the front lines.
Pearl River resident Kelly Mazzarella succumbed to the virus on Friday, and leaves behind a husband and two young daughters.
News 12 was told Mazzarella worked as a nurse manager at Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital where she contracted the virus last month.
"We had no idea this would happen. My whole family, my parents, everybody. We are just completely lost,” says sister Karena Jedlicka.
Her devastated family members say her commitments to patients and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.
"There was just a light about Kelly. You know, the light that emanated from her was just indescribable. Just to be around her made you happier and that's missing now,” says Jedlicka.
GoFundMe page has been created to assist Mazzarella’s husband and children.
The tremendous loss is also felt by the Rockland County community as many have donated thousands to assist the family.
"I know she would've been touched to know what she meant to so many people because helping others meant so much to her,” says Jedlicka.
