A man in Rockland County is hoping to save lives by cycling coast to coast for charity.
Pat Diederich, a 28-year-old North Rockland High School graduate, left his New York home last month and is biking about 10 hours and roughly 100 miles a day with his sight set on San Francisco.
His Honk 4 Hope ride is to support suicide prevention.
"Mental health has been an enormous part of my life, as well as people close to me's, life. The sad thing is you can't always do very much about it. You can be there to listen, but I guess I'm trying to do a little more," he says.
Diederich hopes to raise $10,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He has raised $2,200 so far.
He expects to pedal a total of 4,000 miles and says that will be the easiest part of the trip.
Diederich says the hardest part is finding a place to stay. He recently had to pitch his one-person tent at a Cape May campground.
He is hoping to arrive in San Francisco by Thanksgiving.
