Some Rockland motorists claim tow truck companies overcharged them during last week’s chaotic snowstorm.
Rockland County officials say nearly 400 vehicles were disabled or left abandoned on local and county roads because of the snowstorm.
Several tow companies were called in to assist police.
"We heard from several people that they feel they may have been overcharged, maybe taken advantage of, during the situation,” says Ramapo Police Department Capt. Martin Reilly.
A law in Rockland County says tow companies can only charge a maximum of $108 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
For all other days and times, the maximum charge is $146.
The county does not regulate prices for vehicles that weigh more than 6,500 pounds.

A Ford 150, for example, can weigh more than 5,000 pounds, so anything bigger than it that gets stuck could be paying unregulated prices.
That seems to be what happened to a truck driver on Route 45 in New Hempstead who claims that he was towed and overcharged for the towing.

Ramapo police says it is willing to work with the county to change the law to regulate prices for all vehicles so that no one is taken advantage of.

Those who believe they were overcharged by a tow company can file a complaint with the Rockland Consumer Protection Department.
