The Rockland County community on Friday honored the 82 residents of the county who lost their lives in attacks at the World Trade Center.
The memorial at Haverstraw Bay County Park lists 81 names of residents who were killed on Sept. 11, 2001. It also lists the name of one other man who died in the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993.
The county held its annual in-person ceremony amid the ongoing pandemic.
Family, survivors, first responders and close friends attended in person while others were able to watch on a live stream.
County Executive Ed Day says they held the event in person to stand by the families' sides as they opened their hearts up.
In attendance was Cheryl Russo, who lost her sister Janet M. Alonso 19 years ago. She recalls the day, saying in part, “Evil came and took over, and I know that someday I'll see her again."
Alonso was 41 years old when she was killed while working in Tower One. ”We were very close, we vacationed together, we took care of my mom together,” says Russo.
The Parks Department worked to put the socially distant event together after Day told the families they would still be holding the in-person event.
Dennis Fennell, who is retired from the FDNY, says he’s never missed the ceremony in 19 years.
"It's very important as American citizens that we never forget this day and stay loyal to the guys that made the supreme sacrifice,” says Fennell.
Six bells were tolled and followed by a moment of silence and prayers in remembrance of each plane crash and the fall of both buildings.
Family members also read the names of their loved ones who were lost on that day.
After the ceremony concluded, people were continuing to come by to pay their respects and lay flowers beside the memorial.
