Rockland County Executive Ed Day is presenting three measures to stabilize the county’s finances as COVID-19 continues to take an economic toll.
The first proposal would enable selling the Sain Building in New City which closed in 2017 for $2.4 million.
The second measure would delay the 2021 proposed budget submission from Oct. 1 to Oct. 23. This would allow for two sales tax payouts.
The final initiative would temporarily raise the sales tax to 8 7/8 until the end of 2023. This would be equal to the rate in Yonkers and New York City.
"What's at stake here is about $20 million in sales tax revenue. Twenty-million dollars. If we did property taxes, it would be something in the area of 12%, 13% in a property tax increase,” says County Executive Day.
Day says Rockland is nearing a $40 to $50 million budget shortfall. Choosing to take no action may result in at least 200 layoffs.
