A Rockland County shelter announced Friday it will be closed until further notice as they treat some sick animals.
The Hi-Tor Animal Care Center told News 12 that it recently closed to follow best practices to combat the contagiousness of an animal-only disease commonly referred to as "distemper."
They say the outbreak is only a risk to kittens that are too young to be vaccinated. A source close to the situation said this started when a litter of sick kittens was brought in.
The shelter in Pomona hopes to reopen for surrenders and adoptions on July 29.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story referred to the disease as "canine distemper." It has been corrected above.
