Ridge Hill project hits setback after worker injured
A construction worker was injured and several cars were damaged Wednesday after blasting at the Ridge Hill development site took a dangerous turn.
Blasting by Yonkers Construction has been going on at the multi-million dollar construction project for the past three weeks. Fire officials say Patrick Gianzero, a long-time construction worker, was hit in the chest by a rock from the blast site along the Yonkers/Greenburgh border. Gianzero was rushed to Westchester Medical Center and is expected to recover.
Yonkers Construction officials say they think the accident was the result of heavy rains that caused mud to cover the bottom of the rock. They say that resulted in a miscalculation of the blasting. Fire officials agree, but say they'll look at all possibilities.
Construction officials say they?ve put more safety procedures in place as a result of the accident, but point out that their blasting plan had approvals from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Yonkers Fire Department. OSHA is making sure everything is in order before blasting begins again.
