Reverend Al Sharpton, one of the nation's most outspoken civil rights advocates, was in Yonkers Saturday to discuss allegations of police brutality in the city.

Sharpton had harsh words of criticism for Yonkers police as he appeared in front of hundreds at the Yonkers African Heritage Festival in Trevor Park. Sharpton was originally scheduled to speak at a forum at the Messiah Baptist Church. However, that appearance was canceled due to security concerns.

Sharpton said the 80 cases of police brutality lodged against officers in the past year is too high. ?There must be a balance, there must be justice for everybody. You can?t have two standards of justice in Yonkers, one for blacks and one for whites,? Sharpton said. Sharpton?s words were met with enthusiasm from the crowd.

Sharpton said he plans to set up an office in Yonkers to deal with complaints of police brutality. Yonkers Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett said he is open to anyone who wants to be of assistance to the police and community. Sharpton said he is planning to hold another rally in a few weeks and hopes the mayor and commissioner will publicly join him.
