Retired officer, woman dead in apparent murder-suicide
A former deputy police chief for the City of Newburgh killed his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself, News 12 is told.
Authorities were called to a home on Finnegan Lane in Goshen shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday. They found the body of a woman who had been shot multiple times, and a man's body with a single gunshot wound.
The woman has been identified as 55-year-old Marie Giannone. Her body was found in the driver's seat of her vehicle, steps away from the door to her apartment.
The man has been identified as 55-year-old Patrick Sorrentino, of Marlboro. Investigators say the pair dated for about 18 months before they broke up in August.
Sorrentino was on the Newburgh police force for about 20 years. He retired in 2003 due to a work injury.
Neighbors were shocked to hear of the disturbing violence in their normally quiet neighborhood.
In a statement, the City of Newburgh Police Department said, "It saddens us that Patrick Sorrentino took the life of an innocent person prior to taking his own. Our hearts go out to everyone that is grieving from this senseless act."
