Residents of a Williston Park community are expressing concerns as the owners of a vacant lot look to construct two new buildings.
Neighbors say the lot on the corner of Willis Avenue has sat vacant since 2014, when a fire tore through five businesses. The owners of the lot want to build two three-story, 3,000 square-foot buildings.
Under the proposal, the first floors of both buildings would house retail shops and the top floors would have eight apartments.
While neighbors say they do want to see the space put to use, some are expressing concerns about the proposed multistory development because of parking woes.
Residents in the area say there's already a parking crunch that sees tenants of an existing apartment complex and workers at local businesses park in front of residential homes.
"It causes a domino effect all the way up the block. If you come home and someone is parked in front of your house, you park in front of a neighbor's house," says resident Margaret Delahunty.
A petition against the proposed project has more than 300 signatures.
Steve Mikhlin, the neighbor who is organizing the petition against the project, says the development would be the first of its kind in the area.
"We fear that most of the landlords and owners will follow suit and also build second and third stories, and the fear is that it's going to change the tenor of the neighborhood," he says.
News 12 contacted the developers for comment, but has not received a response.
A zoning meeting on the issue is expected to be held in August or September.
