A wave of Republican support has shifted the balance of power in the nation's capital. 

Republicans seized control of the U.S. Senate on election night, surpassing the 51 seats needed to gain a majority. The takeover marks the first time since the Bush Administration that the GOP will have majority control of both chambers of Congress. 

Democratic senators in Virginia, Louisiana and Alaska are still fighting to hold onto their seats. Louisiana is headed to a Dec. 6 runoff election, while Virginia's race remains too close to call. 

Current Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell will become the new majority leader after winning re-election in Kentucky. 

The White House says that President Obama has invited House and Senate leaders from both parties to a meeting this Friday.
