The mayoral race in the city of Yonkers is heating up.
On Wednesday, Democrat primary challenger Fred Hernandez jumped into the race against Mayor Mike Spano. Now, Republican mayoral hopeful Bill Nuckel says he's in it to win it.
Nuckel is a former council member from the 1980s and is a virtually unknown underdog. He's facing a well-financed incumbent, but says he's not backing down.
Nuckel insists he is not just a "place-card candidate," and says Spano has his eyes set on a county executive run in 2017, but doesn't have the record to prove he deserves that job.
"He's showing that there's not leadership here in Yonkers. Now how can you possibly lead a county?" he says.
Nuckel says Downtown Yonkers by the waterfront is proof that the city has been mismanaged by the current administration.
In a statement, Mayor Spano says he welcomes anyone to the process, and looks forward to discussing the issues that affect the city and its residents.
Nuckel says he still needs to gather the petitions needed to get on the ballot, and then plans to formally announce his candidacy in about a month.
The general election will be held in November.
