Police responded in force to a White Plains apartment Friday in what turned out to be a false report.

David Mejia, who lives in the building, told police that he was assaulted by a group of people and one of them had a handgun. Police searched the apartment of a 23-year-old man and took him into custody for assault but found no gun. Mejia later confessed that the fight only involved him and the suspect and there was no gun.

Mejia is being charged with filing a false report. White Plains police say they will ask the district attorney to seek restitution for the cost of bringing in special units to the scene.
