Rep. DeLauro: Trump tax bill threatens 200K Connecticut jobs
President Donald Trump says his tax cut will bring jobs back to Connecticut, but a report released by Rep. Rosa DeLauro says otherwise.
Rep. DeLauro says Trump's tax law is actually encouraging companies to ship jobs abroad. The report says nearly 200,000 Connecticut jobs are at risk.
"A corporation that makes their wares outside the United States pays between 10.5 to 13 percent in taxes," says Rep. DeLauro. "But the same company making their wares in the United States will pay 21 percent."
DeLauro says the figures include 75,000 lost jobs in the state's manufacturing sector, 20,000 of whom are working in aerospace product and part manufacturing.
The congresswoman made the announcement at an unemployment office in Hamden, surrounded by call center workers. Many of those employees have seen co-workers laid off over the last few years as jobs move overseas.
"We are down to, I think, 3,000 and something members in Connecticut," says Frontier Communications employee Kim Edwards. "And we were much bigger than that."
Republicans say the tax bill is designed to bring more overseas money back to the U.S. They say in turn, those companies will invest and hire more workers.
The stock market has jumped to new heights since the bill was signed.
