Rent-controlled apartments are coming to Kingston. 

The Kingston City Council voted 7-1 to opt into the Emergency Tenant Projection Act.  

This allows upstate cities to establish rent control for certain rentals built before 1974.  

The county rent guidelines board will determine the amount rent can increase each year.  

Supporters say it will help stem a housing crisis in Kingston, benefiting long-term owners and renters - not just corporate landlords.  

There will now be more than 1,200 rental units in Kingston that could be rent stabilized.
