Rockland-based Pfizer is recalling its Accupril blood pressure medication because of high levels of a nitrosamine.
The company says that everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines since they are common in water and foods.
But the levels in these bottles are beyond safe limits, and the FDA says it may increase your risk of cancer if you're exposed to it over long periods of time.
Pfizer says they are not aware of reports of adverse events from the medicine, and there is no immediate risk to patients taking the pills. They say patients currently taking the products should consult with their doctor or health care provider about alternative treatment options for them.
