Hundreds of giant rats have been taking over Mildred Street in Yonkers since a nearby building's roof collapsed.
National Wholesale Liquidators at the Mall at Cross County was condemned in January of last year with food left on the shelves, making it the perfect home for the rodents. After the store's roof collapsed, the rats managed to move out into the surrounding neighborhood behind the store.
"Come out here at night and they're running all around. They're squeezing through the fences. You just see them all over. They pretty much run this neighborhood," says Elissa Roldan.
The rats are coming to the neighborhood through an alley way that leads back to National Wholesale Liquidators. The alleyway is covered in traps, but Bruce Quinto says they're not doing much to prevent the rat infestation.
Mayor Mike Spano talked to residents Tuesday and said that Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp., based in New York City, is in charge of the mall and demolishing the now-empty building.
"They have weeks to do it and if they don't, then the city of Yonkers will take that building down," he said.
Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. responded to News 12, saying their permit to demolish the building is being processed and their demolition contractor is on standby as soon as it's approved.
