Putnam Valley residents petition state about school district vote
Residents in Putnam Valley are petitioning the state to set aside the results of a recent public vote in the school district.
On Dec. 8, voters approved a district plan to create a 10-year, $10 million capital reserve fund for future buildings.
Residents like Dan Vera say shortened voting hours that day, from 3-9 p.m., made voting challenging. Parking was also an issue.
Vera says that the parking lot was packed with spectators for a high school basketball game, making it difficult for voters to find a space.
He has collected about 70 signatures from residents who say they would have voted no if they had known about the vote. A bulk mail notification was never forwarded to their second homes.
The school district says it offered ample notice at meetings, in newspapers and on the school's website. In a statement, Superintendent Frances Wills said that the district "followed all of the requirements of education law in the conduct of the special district meeting to establish a capital reserve fund, and there are no irregularities." He added that they are "confident that the Commissioner of Education will uphold the special vote."
