A Putnam couple was sentenced Tuesday to 60 days in jail for mistreating their son and daughter.
Kent police arrested Eda and James Giordano in March 2005 after they found their 7-year-old emaciated twins virtually imprisoned in the family's Lake Carmel home. The couple pleaded guilty to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. In court, the prosecution said both children slept in bassinets, were fed in high chairs and never left the house since they were 2 years old. The defense attorney says the couple had psychological problems, which led them to fear contact between their children and the outside world.
According to the assistant district attorney handling the case, her office tried to find a more serious charge to file against the Giordanos, but contends there is no stronger law on the books. The Giordanos have given up their parental rights and the children may be placed up for adoption.
