A rally was held at Yonkers City Hall Tuesday to raise concerns over family court abuse.
Protesters claim the Yonkers family court is lawless, unconstitutional and damaging to families.
New York was rated one of the worst states for shared parenting because only the judge can decide whether there will be joint custody, according to the National Parents Organization.
The protesters are looking to enforce the Shared Parent Act, which protects both parents' right to their children.
"The family court system takes the child and says you can only be with one parent…even though you're in an abusive situation, you still have to go back to that home," says community organizer Ashley Pallano.
A spokesperson from the state Office of Court Administration said judges determine the child's best interests and safety without a presumption for either parent.
