Federal funding could be coming to a Westchester neighborhood that has been plagued by flooding.
Dean Bellantoni says his business on Waverly Avenue in Mamaroneck has seen its share of floods, thanks to the neighboring Sheldrake River.
"January 2007, we opened up. First flood was in April. We were brand-new, 4 feet of water inside the gym,” says the UFC Gym owner.
Flooding was also an issue during Hurricane Irene in 2011.
County Legislator and Majority Leader Catherine Parker has been fighting to fix the problem for years.
A Senate committee has now approved funding to pay for half of an estimated $80 million project proposed by the Army Corp of Engineers.
The plan would include construction of retaining walls and a diversion culvert to help the flow of water.
Experts estimate the plan would reduce damage to the area by 87 percent, saving millions of dollars and potentially lives.
If the funding is approved by both the Senate and the House, Westchester County and Mamaroneck would have to come up with the rest of the money to pay for the project.
