? A funeral Mass was held for Monsignor William Smith Wednesday, a long-time educator at St. Joseph?s Seminary who died from pneumonia.
Smith, 69, was a respected leader in the Catholic Church who was known for his expertise on moral issues.
Smith grew up in Yonkers and spent almost four decades teaching moral theology at St. Joseph?s Seminary. In addition, he lectured and wrote on controversial topics like cloning and stem cell research.
?When these things were barely a blip on the radar screen, he was talking to us 25 years ago about it,? says Father Michael Morrow, of St. Eugene?s Church.
Father James O?Connor delivered the eulogy at the funeral Mass and described Smith as a shy but courageous man.
?There was never a paper or talk or a sermon delivered by Bill Smith that was not humorous and made a point,? says Father O?Conner.
Smith was buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
