Expectant moms at the Westchester County Jail are urging lawmakers to opt into the state's Family Medical Leave Plan, but county officials say it's not that simple.

Correction Officer Brooke Jones is blasting Westchester County government for not opting into the New York State Family Medical Leave Plan.

Jones, who is a former candidate to head the Westchester Correction Officers Benevolent Association, says expectant mothers at the county jail desperately need the plan.

"A lot of them are very tired, they're very upset and they can't understand, why this has not been on the front-burner, the front issue all this time, all these years," she says.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer says the existing contract correction officers are working on was negotiated by his predecessor.

He also added that state law doesn't allow the county to just opt into the plan.

"It's really the way the law is structured at the state level. They did not allow for us to just opt into it. What we have to do is negotiate it in...when we do a contractual arrangements," he says.

If the county chooses to opt into the plan, Latimer says it will be across the board, applying to all nine bargaining units in Westchester. It would also cover non-union represented management employees.
