Port Chester store puts expiration dates to the test
Families struggling to survive the economic crisis now have a new place to save money on groceries.
That Discount Place in Port Chester specializes in selling food found in dented cans and items that are slightly past their "sell-by" dates.
The concept to slash prices comes from Jane Stout, whose family has owned grocery stores for generations. She calls her store the land of "misfit groceries."
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says "sell-by" or "use-by" dates do not necessarily mean foods are unsafe.
