Attorneys representing Port Chester in a federal voter discrimination suit gathered evidence Sunday ahead of the trial.

Opening arguments start Monday, May 21 in White Plains. The Department of Justice filed the suit against Port Chester in December, claiming its "at-large" system disenfranchises the Hispanic vote. Although half of the village's 28,000 residents are Hispanic, a Hispanic person has never served on the board. The government wants Port Chester to carve out several districts that would emphasize the Latino vote.

Lawyers representing the village canvassed the village's streets Sunday to see if census information is accurate. Attorney Anthony Piscionere says he's found problems with data he feels will weaken the federal case.

"These inaccuracies in the map we feel will poke some very large holes in the government's case," Piscionere said.
