A Port Chester man is home after nearly losing his fight with coronavirus. His battle represents a disturbing trend that shows the Latinx community is disproportionately impacted by the virus.
Cesar Poroj beat the odds after four long months in the hospital -- nearly three of them spent in a coma.
The Port Chester man is embracing life, despite being weakened by his battle with the virus. He says it all started back in April when he began having chest pains.
He was so close to death that doctors nearly pulled the plug.
Immigration activist Luis Yumbla helped Poroj's family, who is originally from Guatemala. They helped keep him on life support, paving the way for a miraculous recovery.
Language barriers, lack of health insurance and resources are roadblocks to many in the Latinx community, which has been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
According to the CDC, they make up a third of all coronavirus cases -- nearly twice their share of the population as a whole.
Poroj was unemployed when he contracted the virus, and he is now unable to work. Medical bills are piling up, but he says he's just thankful to be alive.
To help with Poroj's medical bills, community members are organizing a lunch fundraiser Sunday.
