Port Chester cab drivers went on a one-day strike Monday, the second in the past few days, in protest of a proposed partnership.
They parked at the village train station for several hours and refused to take any customers. Customers stuck without rides said they sympathized with the drivers, but it was an inconvenience.
Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla wants all drivers to have background, drug and alcohol checks courtesy of the Westchester County Taxi and Limousine Commission. According to Pilla, the village is too understaffed to conduct such tests on close to 100 drivers.
A Port Chester Taxi Association spokesman said the mayor has refused to meet with its drivers to find out why they are opposed to it. He said if the deal goes through, the drivers will face a significant increase in rules and regulations by the commission.
The cabbies would also have to be licensed with the village and the commission.
There is a public meeting on the licensing issue scheduled for this Thursday at village hall at 7 p.m.
