(02/13/06) PORT CHESTER ? Several families are homeless after a fire tore through a Willow Street apartment building in Port Chester Monday.
Firefighters responded to the incident shortly after the fire broke out at 4:30 p.m. Although it took only 20 minutes to extinguish the flames, firefighters say every apartment in the building was virtually destroyed. Firefighters had to battle both the flames and messy conditions left over from the weekend?s snowstorm.
Although the building?s owner says three families lived in the building, the Red Cross says they are helping six families who claim they lived in the facility. According to Red Cross representatives, two families will be staying with relatives. The others will be put up in hotels overnight. No one was hurt in the fire.
